Getting the solar subsidy is mostly paperwork, and the delays usually come from small details: a name spelt differently on two documents, the wrong number copied from the bill, a vendor who isn't registered. Here is what to check before you apply, the order things happen in, and how to fix an application that comes back.

If you'd like the scheme itself explained first, including how much it pays and who qualifies, start with our PM Surya Ghar guide.

Subsidy for a home
up to ₹78,000
Solar loan up to 3 kW
about 5.75% a year
Panels must be
made in India, with Indian cells
Scheme approved until
31 March 2027

Check four things first

Do these before you register. Each takes a few minutes now, and can take weeks to sort out once an application is stuck.

Your name is spelt the same everywhere

Your Aadhaar, your electricity bill and the bank account the subsidy is paid into are checked against each other, letter by letter. If they differ, the application waits until one of them is corrected.

One missing space is enough. Correct whichever record is different before you apply: a bank can usually change it quickly, while your DISCOM needs a written request with a copy of your Aadhaar.

The bill is a home connection in the right name

The scheme is for homes, so your bill should show a domestic or residential category. If the connection is in someone else's name, such as a parent or a previous owner, either they apply or the connection is transferred to you first. If the house has more than one owner, keep a no-objection letter signed by each of them.

Your sanctioned load covers the system

The system can't be bigger than the sanctioned load printed on your bill, in kW or kVA. If you want a 3 kW system on a 2 kW connection, ask your DISCOM for a load increase before installation, not after.

Nothing is pending

Clear any unpaid electricity dues, and make sure your bank account is linked to your Aadhaar. The subsidy is paid by direct benefit transfer, which only works with an Aadhaar-linked account.

Choose a registered vendor

Only vendors registered on the national portal for your DISCOM can file the installation report that the subsidy depends on. The portal lists them, and you can filter by state, district and DISCOM and see how many systems each one has installed.

Before you sign, ask any vendor these three things:

  • Are the panels DCR? A subsidised system must use panels made in India with Indian-made cells, known as DCR panels. With any other panels there is no subsidy, and the only fix is replacing them.
  • What does the five-year maintenance cover? Registered vendors must look after the system for five years from commissioning. Ask what that includes, and make sure you get the warranty papers listing the serial numbers of your panels and inverter.
  • Can I see the price broken down? The portal publishes typical costs for the main parts, which makes a quote that's out of line easier to spot. GST on solar systems has been 5% since September 2025, down from 12%.

The order it all happens in

Our PM Surya Ghar guide lists all eight official steps. Here is the same journey grouped into five stages, with what you need to do at each one.

  1. You

    Register and apply

On pmsuryaghar.gov.in, choose your state and DISCOM (in Hyderabad, TGSPDCL) and enter the consumer number from your bill. Use the consumer number, not the meter number. Then pick your vendor.

  2. Your vendor

    Installation

The vendor installs the system and puts its details and photos on the portal, often through your login. Check that what they've entered matches what's on your roof before you confirm it.

  3. Your DISCOM

    Inspection and net meter

The DISCOM inspects the system and installs the net meter, and you sign the net-metering agreement. How long this takes depends on your DISCOM.

  4. You

    Bank details and redemption

Once the commissioning certificate is issued, add your bank details on the portal and redeem the subsidy.

  5. The Centre

    The money arrives

The subsidy is paid into your account, usually within 30 days. If you took a solar loan, it goes to the loan first.

Paying for it

You pay the vendor for the system, and the subsidy comes back to you after commissioning. If paying the full amount upfront is a stretch, the scheme comes with its own bank loan.

  • For systems up to 3 kW, public sector banks lend up to ₹2 lakh without collateral, at the repo rate plus 0.5%. That is about 5.75% a year at present, repaid over up to 10 years.
  • For bigger systems, up to 10 kW, banks lend more at their normal solar loan rates.
  • You usually pay a small share yourself. SBI, for example, asks for 10%.
  • With a loan, the subsidy is paid into the loan account first, so it brings down what you owe.

In Delhi the state adds its own subsidy on top, up to ₹1.56 lakh in total for a 3 kW system. Our PM Surya Ghar guide explains how that part is paid.

If your application comes back

A returned or rejected application is usually not the end. The application status on the portal shows your DISCOM's remarks. Fix what they point to and resubmit; you don't need to start again.

The names don't match
Correct the record that's different, then resubmit.
The meter number was entered
Re-enter the consumer number from your bill instead.
There are unpaid dues
Clear them, then resubmit once the bill shows nothing outstanding.
The bank account isn't linked to Aadhaar
Ask your bank to link it. It usually takes a few working days and needs no new application.
The system is bigger than the sanctioned load
Apply for a load increase, or reduce the system size.
Photos or documents aren't clear
Re-upload clear daylight photos that show the serial numbers and nameplates.

If a problem drags on, raise a grievance on the portal. You get a tracking number, and complaints are meant to be answered within 30 days.

Flats and housing societies

In a block of flats the roof belongs to everyone, so families usually can't claim the household subsidy on their own. Instead, the housing society or residents' welfare association can claim ₹18,000 per kW for a system that powers the common areas, such as lighting, water pumps, lifts and EV charging.

The limit is 3 kW per house and 500 kW for the whole society, and the 500 kW includes any systems residents have put up themselves.

The March 2027 deadline

Registration, installation, inspection and the net meter all take time. If you want the subsidy, it's safer to start now than to wait for an extension that may not come.

How we help

Most of the work is getting the details right in the right order. We do it with you, from checking your bill to the day the subsidy is paid.

  • We go through the four checks above with you before anything is filed
  • A free site survey, and a system sized to your bills and your sanctioned load
  • Help with the portal application, the net-metering paperwork and the photos your DISCOM needs
  • Installation by our own team, then after-sales service and panel cleaning

Not sure your paperwork is in order?

Send us a photo of your electricity bill. We'll check the name, the category and the sanctioned load, and tell you what needs fixing before you apply.

Questions people ask

Can my installer apply for me?

The vendor can fill in the details through your login, and most do. The application is still yours, so check what they have entered, especially the system size and the photos, before you tick the box confirming it.

The connection is in my father's name. Who should apply?

The person named on the electricity bill applies, and the subsidy goes into a bank account in that same name. If you want it in your name, get the connection transferred to you first.

Is the subsidy based on the panels or the inverter?

The panels. The subsidy is worked out from the total capacity of the solar panels installed, not from the rating of the inverter.

Can I claim the subsidy for a system I have already installed?

Only if it went through the scheme: applied for on the portal, installed by a registered vendor and fitted with made-in-India panels. A system installed outside the scheme cannot claim it later.

How do I check where my application is?

Log in on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your consumer number and mobile number. The application status shows which stage it has reached and any remarks from your DISCOM.

Is GST charged on a rooftop solar system?

Yes, at 5% since September 2025, down from 12%. On a typical 3 kW home system, that took roughly ₹9,000 to ₹10,500 off the price.
